Link to Hope Part 3

Jack contacts the Doctor, and hormones and mood swings are having an impact.

********************************************************

Gwen looked up as Jack and Ianto came into the hub together.

“You must have been called out early. Why didn’t you call the rest of us in?”

“No actually, we were at mine all night. Jack came for dinner so that we could talk.” Ianto said coolly, heading for the kitchen to put the kettle on as Jack quietly headed for his office.

Ianto sighed as Gwen followed him into the kitchen.

“Did he explain why he vanished without a word, despite me being only in the next room?”

“You know Gwen, there are more important things than you feeling slighted that he didn’t tell you he was going. There are even more important things than Torchwood. Jack and I had other stuff to talk about.” He snapped, pulling down the mugs.

“You slept with him, didn’t you. You jumped back in bed with him.”

“Not that it’s ANY of your business, Gwen, but no. We needed to talk, and that’s what we did.”

“Well, don’t think the rest of us will forgive his recent attitude so fast. He has a lot to do to make it up to the rest of us.”

“Right now, the rest of you can just……”

“Ianto!” Jack’s voice cut across whatever he was going to say. Jack turned icy blue eyes on Gwen.

“Get out. Get out before I sack you, and retcon this whole place and everything connected with it out of your memory.” Jack snarled.

Gwen turned her best reproachful hurt look on him, and Ianto thought Jack was going to throttle her.

“Out!” Jack yelled.

Owen pushed himself between Gwen and Jack, making sure Jack couldn’t carry through on the threat implied in his body language.

“Whoa, what the fuck is going on here?” He demanded.

“I want all of you out of the hub, NOW. I don’t care what you do, investigate something, go and get drunk, find someone to shag, I do not care, but GET OUT!”

“Come on Ianto love,” Gwen said in her best ‘caring’ tone, making sure her lip trembled to make sure they knew how upset she was.

“No, you lot go. I have stuff I have to get done down in the archives. Will that be out of the way enough Jack?”

“Actually Yan, I could use your help with some files. I knocked them off my desk, and I’m not sure what should be in which file.”

“Sure, no problem.”

Ianto followed Jack to his office as the others gathered their stuff and left. Ianto saw Tosh giving him a look of concern and smiled in his most reassuring manner. Jack dropped into his chair and leaned his elbows on his desk, scrubbing his hands through his hair and sending it into disarray.

“I’m sorry Yan.”

“Hey, not your fault. You’re stressed, and mood swings are fairly common. My sister was terrible for the first few months of her pregnancy while her hormones were out of whack.”

“God, could you imagine their reaction. ‘Sorry I’m a little moody, but my hormones probably won’t stabilize until I hit the second trimester, if then.’ They’d think I had lost the plot.”

“Well, assuming that you stay on Earth for the duration, they’ll have to get used to it, won’t they? Have you contacted him yet?”

“No, I’m not sure what to say.”

“Start with something simple, I need to see you,” Ianto said softly.

Jack reached into his desk drawer, sliding his hand right to the back. When he sat back in the chair, he was holding a mobile phone that Ianto had never seen before. Sleek and black, looked to be top of the range.

“You’re not serious? A mobile phone?”

“A super mobile,” Jack said with a wry smile, flipping it open. He hit the speed dial, and took a deep breath before putting it to his ear. Ianto slipped into the chair across the desk from him, watching quietly.

“Hey Doc, it’s me,” Jack said quietly, indicating that the phone had been answered.

“No, no emergency, they’re not opening the rift again.” Jack rolled his eyes at Ianto at the Doctor’s assumption that the team were trying to end the world again.

“No, nothing earth shattering, no invasions.”

“Because I need to see you, it’s important.”

“I’m in the hub.”

“No, no one but Ianto, and I trust him.”

Jack leaned forward and scrabbled in amongst the junk on his desk for a pen and some paper.

“OK, go ahead,” he said, scratching down whatever the Doctor was saying to him.

“Right, OK, two hours,” Jack said, flipping the phone shut.

“Well?” Ianto asked.

“He won’t come here, he still doesn’t entirely trust Torchwood. I’m to meet him by the visitors center for the beacon walking tour.”

“In two hours?”

“Yes.”

“We’d better get moving then. It will take that long to drive out there. We’d better take my car, they can track the SUV if they decide to come back.”

“Right, let’s go.” Jack agreed, slipping the super phone into his pocket and making sure he hadn’t left anything around that he wouldn’t want the others getting their hands on.

When Ianto pulled the car into the car park at the visitors center, Jack could see Martha and the Doctor already waiting, sitting at one of the picnic tables eating ice cream. The Doctor looked up as they walked over, looking at Ianto cautiously.

“Doctor, Martha, this is Ianto Jones, Ianto, this is the Doctor, and Martha.”

“I think we already met,” the Doctor said, cocking his head briefly as he looked at Ianto.

Canary Wharf, briefly.”

“You were the young man who was trying to tell Yvonne that she shouldn’t be taking things from the archives without being sure what they did.”

“Yes, shame she didn’t listen,” Ianto said quietly.

“Yes, it is. So, Jack, you wanted to see me?”

“Yeah, we need to talk.”

“Go on then.”

“Not here. Ianto, would you mind keeping Martha company for a few minutes while the Doctor and I go have that chat?”

“It will be my pleasure,” he said, giving Martha a genuine smile.

“What’s that all about?” Martha asked, watching as the Doctor and Jack went to sit at a table some distance away from the others, in the lee of  a rocky outcrop, sitting either side, facing each other.

“Sorry, not my place to say. Would you like a cup of tea?” He asked, nodding in the direction of the small café.

“Why not.” She sighed, allowing Ianto to lead her inside.

Jack watched as Ianto took Martha inside the small building, avoiding the older man’s eyes.

“Come on Jack, you didn’t bring me here so you could watch him take Martha into a bad café. What did you want to talk about?”

Jack folded his hands on top of the table and fixed his eyes on them, still not willing to meet the hazel gaze of the man across from him.

“Jack?” The Doctor prompted, his tone softening a little as he realized that why ever Jack had asked him to come here, it was no whim.

“I think I’m pregnant,” Jack whispered almost too softly for the Doctor to hear.

“What?”

Jack finally looked up, and a single tear was slipping down his face as he met the Doctor’s eyes.

“I think I am carrying your child.” Jack said more clearly, flattening his hands on the wooden planks of the table to try to stop them shaking.

“You’re not sure?”

“No, I’m not sure. Its not as if there’s a reliable pregnancy test I can buy in the 21st century, is there?” Jack snapped, his eyes flashing.

“Hey, shhh, calm down. OK, first things first. Get you to the medical bay, and run a diagnostic on you. Once we see for sure you’re pregnant, then we can see where we go from there. The TARDIS is just over the hill, will your friend Ianto worry if we’re not here when they come out?”

“No, he’ll know I’m with you. What about Martha?”

“No, she wouldn’t want to risk bringing him to the TARDIS, after what happened when she brought the old girl to the Master’s attention. She’ll wait there until I come back for her, I hope.”

“OK, OK, lets do it then.” Jack stood up as he spoke, waiting for the Doctor to lead him to the TARDIS.

He got Jack to strip to his underwear when they reached the medical bay, and told him to hop up onto the table.

“Right, a full body scan should do the trick. It will confirm if you’re pregnant, and make sure everything is in tip top shape.”

“OK.”

The Doctor set the scan running, leaning back to watch Jack as the blue lights from the scan played over him. The young immortal looked tense and scared.

“Jack, would it really be that bad, to be pregnant with my child?”

“That would depend on what you did, wouldn’t it Doctor.”

“What?”

“You can barely stand to be in the same room as me. I’m scared…..”

“Scared of what Jack?”

“That you’ll take it away from me. That you won’t want your child raised by something so ‘wrong’ and that you’ll take it away.”

“I promise you Jack, that whatever happened, whatever was decided, I wouldn’t do that.”

The scanner at the bedside bleeped, and the blue light cut out. They looked at each other for a long moment, and the Doctor moved over to the console with a sigh, checking the readouts.

“Well?” Jack asked irritably as the Doctor stood staring at the screen.

“You’re pregnant. Nine weeks.” The Doctor sounded stunned. He turned the screen round so that Jack could see the tiny form in the crystal clear image, less than three centimeters long, it was nonetheless unmistakable.

“Oh God.” Jack breathed, a shaking hand reaching  out to touch the image. It was suddenly real, he was pregnant with the Doctor’s child.

“What are we going to do Doctor? You and the TARDIS can’t stand to have me around, and there is no way I can stay on Earth in this condition.”

“I wouldn’t want you planet bound anywhere, there’s too much risk of something happening to you or the baby if you’re in too early a time period, and in too late a time, you run the risk of hitting the time agency.”

“So, what are we going to do?” Jack repeated.

“I have no idea,” the Doctor admitted, looking the younger man in the eye.

Another great piece from you hon.

I congratulate you on being able to write three Jack fics at once and yet be able to retain their great quality.

Did you see the ep?
Up late still figuring out what to make of Jack's bit of info.
I do need to get myself some Ten/Jack icons now

Thank you, I hope I can retain the quality all the way through. I have an idea on the e-verse next, kind of following on from the last chapter.

I SAW the episode, but I didn't hear it, they frown on us having the tv's loud enough that the customers might hear (Honestly, how inconsiderate, lol) if you find any good icons, let me know please, I can never have too many lol.

oh this is good and I do love Gwen being put in her place! damned cow

I do love Ianto being there for Jack and that the Doctor isn't quite so callus about Jack as Jack feared...

can't wait for the next installment!

From: [identity profile] amythest-n-ice.livejournal.com

I love having them slapping her down!! lol. Its a shame the scriptwriters don't do it, imagine the scene

' "Oh Jack, you can't do that, its so....inhumane" Flutter eyelashed, make cow eyes while attempting to look ernest. "Will you just mind your own business unless you have something useful to contribute! It ate four tourists, how humane do you think that was?" "Oops, it ate her, bad alien" snicker!!!'

Hopefully should update all three series in the next few days.

Oh, I needed this after watching ... that. *sighs* More soon, please? I think this is my favorite of your verses at this moment in time. (Note the hedging. I'm so fickle.)

From: [identity profile] amythest-n-ice.livejournal.com

Thanks, glad it helped you over that daft DW moment 'they called me....' indeed *rolls eyes*

Um, this wouldn't be your current favorite because Jack is pregnant, by any chance would it? lol.

Where did you get that awesome icon? I think I might have to add it to the growing collection I'm amassing, well, I have to do something to fill up the 105 spaces ;-))

Um, this wouldn't be your current favorite because Jack is pregnant, by any chance would it? lol.

Ummm ... *scuffs foot against the ground* ... mebbe?

As for the icon, [livejournal.com profile] christn7 made it. Isn't it lovely?

From: [identity profile] bgwqlc.livejournal.com

Wow... that was pretty amazing. At first I wondered where it was going but when you got to the pregnancy part I just was floored. The thought of Jack and the Doctor having a baby is pretty interesting. I wonder what it would look like?

From: [identity profile] wickedplotbunny.livejournal.com

Lovely fic! *huggles Jack and Ten*

More soon? Pwease? *tries for puppy dog eyes*

From: [identity profile] amythest-n-ice.livejournal.com

Glad you're liking it. Hmm, what will the baby look like? gorgeous + gorgeous = adorable *grin*

From: [identity profile] tiggerbrasilf.livejournal.com

I just read the first 2 parts of this and its cool! Interesting to see what it is going (:

From: [identity profile] galaxy-song.livejournal.com

oh I am loveing this the interaction between the Doctor and Jack is so good please add more soon

From: [identity profile] vampireonearth.livejournal.com

Aww I loved Jack's reaction towards telling the Doctor. And the Doctor was speechless - for once! I love this fic, hope you update soon. Can't wait for the next bit!

From: [identity profile] texan-elf.livejournal.com

Yay more Hope goodness! Though I was plesantly surprised by how reasonable Ten seemed when Jack told him his fears. Based on what I've seen of the reactor seen from a clip on YouTube I thought he'd be more *thinks how to say it* grrr. I hope this means a better Ten. If only RTD would let fanfic writers write the show. ;-)

From: [identity profile] amythest-n-ice.livejournal.com

Yes, I personally think that the reactor scene, and a couple of the others portrayed the Doctor as a bit of a w#'@!r, and as for Jack's last scene, least said, soonest mended!!!!
Fanfic writers could definitely do a better job than some of their staff writers, RTD included, in some cases!

From: [identity profile] 2nd-toshiko.livejournal.com

oh, im reading this all over again! i loved it the last time, and i love it now. i have to say, one thing stands out now that never did before: the way you deal with reactions. i like how you dont make it over emotional, just raw, hard feelings, the way they would be in real life. not too soppy and not to dry. its brillant. you should be proud of this:)
