Ok, deep breath.....count to a million.
Ok, deep breath.....count to a million.
Donna Noble.
I tried, I really tried, she got more of a chance off me than Gwen Bloody Cooper ever did, and I hate her.
I watched the Runaway Bride, she was dreadful, and when the show ended, I consoled myself with the knowledge it was a one off, she would never darken our screens again. Then, there was a rumor, a whisper that I begged the heavens to prove untrue, that she was to be elevated to companion status, but, alas this rumor proved true.
It was with some trepidation that I sat down in my Cardiff hotel room, a bottle of mint Baileys to one side, the remote control to the other, in case emergency channel changing was required as a safe alternative to throwing something at the television, and commenced to watch the season premier of Doctor Who. To my surprise, she was actually bearable. Could it be the Baileys? I hear you ask. Nay, I say, I have only imbibed half a glass. I wondered, had a miracle been performed? Had they noticed that a character needed some work, and set out to smooth out the edges, and reduce the level of annoyance she can provoke BEFORE filming could commence?
With less fear, I settled to watch episode 2, only to find I had relaxed too soon, she was back to the beginning, only, without the froofy frock.
She is loud, strident, and will not listen to reason, thinks it all should be done as she wishes. Oh God, she is Gwen Cooper with red hair!
I can understand the need to move away from the character of Rose Tyler, doe eyed, blinded to his faults by her love for the Time Lord, especially now that she is coming back. We would all die from sugar overload with more than one Rose Tyler in the TARDIS, but I thought Martha did that marvelously, she was smart, sassy, willing to tell the Doctor off, and yet LISTEN to what he told her. Even if she did fall in love with the Doctor when he clearly belongs with Jack and/or Rose, it was never forced violently into our faces. Donna though is too much an extreme opposite to Rose, not so much a step too far as a marathon.
*Sigh* A couple more weeks, to allow her character to settle, see if it improves, and if not, I shall be in the loathsome position of trying to find something else to watch until the Captain Jack episodes, which is MONTHS away.
