Timing

************************

Jack was stretched out on the sofa closest to the fire in the library, a book resting open over his stomach, and a cooling cup of mint tea on the table to the side of him. He shifted against the cushions piled behind his back, trying to get comfortable, then gave up with a sigh, knowing it was a lost cause. At 40 weeks pregnant, comfort was a long distant memory. The Doctor came in and sat on the edge of the cushion beside him, and Jack smiled as he leaned in to kiss him.

"OK, Bobby and I are ready to go then, and Ianto is going to keep an eye on you until we get back." The Doctor said, his hand smoothing back and forth over the bump.

"Ianto could still go with you two. I can look after myself for a few hours." Jack said, leaning back into the cushions.

"Jack, you could give birth any time now. I can't leave you alone." The Doctor sighed, leaning in to steal another kiss.

"I know." Jack sighed, rolling his eyes.

"Be good, don't give Ianto a hard time." The Doctor grinned, getting up again and heading out.

After the poison flowers incident on Alcath, they had relocated to the Eye of Orion, and now the Doctor wanted to take Bobby to one of his favorite places, a placid shallow lake, ideal for paddling with his son. Jack hadn't wanted to face the two hour walk in both directions, so he had opted to hole up in the library, and Ianto had said he'd stay with him so that the Doctor could still take Bobby

Jack had dropped of over the book when Ianto checked in on him a couple of hours later. He put down the fresh cup of mint tea and gently started to ease the book out of Jack's lax fingers. Jack woke with a start, blinking up at Ianto in confusion.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you, I was just moving the book."

"'s OK. How long have I been asleep?"

"Not sure. They've been gone about two and a half hours though. Do you want me to bring you some lunch or something?"

"No, I'll come to the kitchen with you. If I stay here I'll just fall asleep again." Jack said, swinging his legs over the side of the sofa. Ianto automatically offered him a hand to help haul him up, and Jack accepted it, swaying for a moment before he caught his balance. He picked up the cup Ianto had brought him, and sipped the tea before they headed for the kitchen.

"You know, I'll be so glad when she's born and I can drink coffee again." Jack sighed, pulling a face at the flavor.

"Not long now." Ianto grinned.

He made Jack sit at the large table while he puttered around making a couple of sandwiches. He didn't notice Jack wince at a pain across his stomach, rubbing the bump lightly to soothe the pain away. He was relaxed again by the time Ianto turned around and put a sandwich in front of him.

"So, did he mention what time they might be back?" Jack asked Ianto casually.

"Some time this evening. He took a picnic for them." Ianto answered, giving Jack a quick concerned look.

"Why?"

"Just curious, wondering if they'll be here for dinner." Jack shrugged.

"Probably, he wanted to get Bobby back before dark."

Jack nodded and finished off his sandwich.

"I think I might go and lie down for a while." He said to Ianto.

"Are you all right Jack?"

"Fine, just tired."

"Do you want me to wake you in a while?"

"Sure, if I'm not already up, thanks Yan."

Jack went to the room he shared with the Doctor, and lowered himself down onto the mattress, falling asleep the minute his head hit the pillow.

He was woken from his nap by a sharp pain slicing through him, a familiar pain.

"No, oh no no no, not a good time for this baby." He said, stroking his stomach until the pain eased and then levering himself to his feet, heading out into the corridor. He paused as he stepped into the hallway, looking both ways along the corridor. Medbay was to the left, but he needed Ianto. His waters breaking decided him, he knew where the medbay was, but Ianto could be almost anywhere. He moved carefully along the corridor, one hand on the wall for support as another contraction tore through him.

"TARDIS, can you time them for me, and encourage Ianto in the direction of the medbay, please." He gasped at the ceiling as the contraction eased. He felt her in his head, calm and reassuring, and at a gentle mental nudge, he walked into the medbay, which she had moved for him. He crumpled to his knees at the next contraction, trying to keep his breathing even as he leaned his head against the cool wall. He felt arms around his shoulders and looked up at Ianto.

"Can you stand up, so I can get you on the couch?" Ianto asked calmly.

"Help me?" Jack asked.

"Of course." Ianto said, bracing Jack and getting him upright. Jack leaned into him heavily, breathing hard as Ianto guided him over to the the couch and helped him to lie on it.

"What can I do now Jack?"

"Go to the console room, phone the Doctor and find out how far away he is." Jack suggested, unable to keep from crying out this time at another contraction. He glanced at the timer the TARDIS had put up for him and groaned, they were coming every three minutes already.

"What? Are you all right, what's wrong?" Ianto asked at the groan.

"They're too close together. Unless he's right outside, he's not going to get here in time." Jack said, closing his eyes for a moment.

"What? You have to hold on Jack, I can't deliver a baby."

"You may not have much of a choice, she's coming now whether we're ready or not. Go call him, tell him to get back as fast as he can." Jack said. Ianto nodded and ran for the door.

In the console room, he punched the number for the phone Jack had made the Doctor carry, fidgeting nervously as he waited for the man to answer.

"Hello?" The familiar voice finally said.

"It's Ianto. Um, where are you?"

"About half an hour away. Why?"

"Because Jack is in labor."

"Oh, Rassilon. How long has he been having contractions?"

"I don't know, but they're coming every three minutes."

"Hell. We'll be back as quick as I can. Stay with him, get him out of his clothes if he hasn't done it himself."

"Right, anything else?"

"I can't really talk you through delivering a baby over the phone. He's done this before Ianto, he can be more help to you than me. Twenty minutes, if I run."

"OK." Ianto said, hanging up and hurrying back to medbay.

Jack was trying to get his clothes off between contractions when Ianto came back in, but between the pains, and the fact his hands were shaking, his coordination was shot. Ianto went over and helped him, supporting him through another contraction halfway through the process.

"He's about twenty minutes away Jack, you just have to hang on that long." He said, guiding the now naked Jack back to lie on the couch and draping a sheet over him when he started to shiver slightly.

"Not going to happen Ianto. She's impatient." Jack said, breathing through another pain. Ianto looked up and was startled when he met Jack's eyes. The gold that he had last seen when Jack was only a few months pregnant, and had been abducted by slavers, once more lit the pupils of his eyes, but it was more pronounced now, the pupil more gold than black.

"We can do this Ianto." He said softly.

"We're going to have to, aren't we?" Ianto said, faking a bright grin.

Jack smiled, not buying Ianto's grin for a moment, then another contraction wiped the smile off his face.

The Doctor moved as fast as he could, holding Bobby firmly to his chest as he headed back to the TARDIS. He struggled to get his key into the lock, but finally got the door open, slamming it closed and crossing the console room in a few strides. He reached the medical bay in a few minutes, hearing a baby cry as he opened the door.

Inside, Ianto stood beside the bed where Jack lay. Both men were drenched in sweat, and Jack looked exhausted. The Doctor's eyes were drawn to the little bundle wrapped in a blanket on Jack's chest. The bundle was the source of the crying, and the Doctor went over to meet his daughter, and introduce Bobby to his new sister.

Jack smiled up at him tiredly, moving a fold of the blanket aside so they could see the tiny little girl.

"She takes after you, moves fast." Jack said, his fingertips lightly caressing her cheek.

"How do you mean?" He asked softly, letting Bobby down onto the couch at a nod from Jack. The little boy crawled up to have a closer look at the little bundle.

"She was born about ten minutes after we hung up." Ianto answered.

"Wow. Are you OK Jack?"

"I'm fine, just tired, and she's perfect." Jack said. He looked at Bobby, who was still staring at the little girl.

"Hey Bobby, this is your little sister." He said. Bobby reached out slowly and gingerly touched her arm, then he crawled up and cuddled in against Jack's side, still looking at the baby.

"Why don't I take her for a while Jack." The Doctor said, realizing that Jack was fighting to keep his eyes open. Jack nodded and let the Doctor lift their daughter away, watching as the Doctor grinned at Ianto.

"Thank you for being there for him Ianto."

"I'm glad I was. I'm also eternally grateful that I will never have to go through that." Ianto said, reaching out to touch the tiny fingers.

"Like a doll." He mused.

Jack kissed Bobby on the top of his head as he drifted off, and Bobby wasn't far behind him, falling asleep still cuddled into Jack.

"Doctor, when Jack was in labor, his pupils changed again, and there was more gold in them this time." Ianto said when he was sure Jack was asleep.

"I know, I've seen it myself a couple of times, when he's been stressed. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about Ianto." The Doctor said, looking down at his daughter again.

"I need to talk to your mama about a name for you, princess." He whispered. Tiny rosebud lips parted in a yawn, and hazel eyes opened briefly opened, before she too went to sleep.

The Doctor chuckled softly at his slumbering family, and gently lowered the baby into the little crib beside Jack's bed.

"I'm just going to go and tuck Bobby in, then I'll be right back." The Doctor said.

"I'll take him if you want."

"Sure?"

"Yes. If it's ok with you, I want to phone my mam, she wanted to know when the baby came."

"Go ahead, and tell her we'll visit in a couple of weeks so she can meet her, as promised."

"Thank you." Ianto said, his smile brightening. He picked up Bobby and slipped from the room. The Doctor went back to Jack's bedside, kissing him lightly on the forehead. Jack's eyes fluttered open at the contact.

"I didn't mean to wake you." The Doctor said.

"It's OK. I thought of a name for her, if you want to think about it."

"Tell me." The Doctor said, taking Jack's hand and stroking the palm with his thumb.

"Kalen Angharad. Kalen is a pretty name, and Ianto delivered her, so I thought maybe his mom's name." Jack yawned.

"Perfect, just like her. Sleep Jack, you need to rest now." He said. Jack quickly complied, falling asleep. The Doctor leaned back in his chair, a strange feeling in his chest. It took him a few minutes, but he identified the feeling. Contentment.

*************************

I couldn't bring myself to actually do the birth, because not having ever had kids, I had no idea how to do it. I hope that what I have written isn't too glaringly inaccurate.
Thanks kinkyvampire for the name *winks*

Coming soon - back to Wales again.
