Not mine, never likely to be mine, unless anyone knows the codes to RTDs safe???? No?? Never mind, we can live in hope.

Sleep

*****************************

Ianto slipped quietly into the medbay, hoping that the Doctor would be asleep, but he sighed when he saw the exhausted time lord exactly where he had been when Ianto had been forced to go and sleep. He was sitting between two medical couches, keeping a vigil over the two precious souls lying on them.

On the couch closest to where Ianto currently stood in the doorway, Bobby's little form lay pale and still, biosensors in the couch monitoring the unconscious child's vitals, tracking the slow breathing and heartbeat. The Doctor was sure Bobby was going to be OK, he was just unconscious while his body built strength back up. The other patient, the Doctor wasn't so sure of.

Jack's heavily pregnant body was surrounded by support equipment, helping him breathe, filtering his blood, running in nutrients to him and his unborn child, while a secondary set of monitors focused on the baby, the quick beat of her heart slower than normal, but still a rapid counterpoint to the sluggish beat from Jack's monitors. Ianto moved to stand behind the man, resting a light hand on his shoulder.

"You need to go and sleep. You've been here for two days Doctor, and you're exhausted."

"I can't leave them." The Doctor said hoarsely.

"I can watch them for a couple of hours. You have to rest, you're no good to them if you keel over."

"I don't want to leave them Ianto, this is my fault, and I have to stay with them."

"How can this be your fault? You didn't do this Doctor, it was an accident." Ianto said.

"No, if I had taken us to the Eye of Orion, like I did when he was due with Bobby, this wouldn't have happened. I wanted to go somewhere different for a change, and I didn't think to check that there might be anything dangerous there."

"It is not your fault. Please go and sleep."

"I can't sleep Ianto. I keep seeing it when I close my eyes."

Ianto sighed, but couldn't really say anything to that, he had had a couple of nightmares himself about finding them lying in the long grass on Alcath II, pale and barely breathing, victims of some toxin in the thorns of the flowers. His heart still raced with adrenaline at the thought of the run back to the TARDIS, him cradling Bobby to his chest and the Doctor carrying Jack, how scared he had been when Bobby stopped breathing as they reached the medlab.

"What about the baby, how's she doing?" Ianto asked, giving up on the sleep issue for the moment, and resting a light hand on the bump.

"She's doing better than I thought at this point. There's a 50/50 chance now that if Jack starts to destabilize and I have to deliver her, she will survive out of the womb. I hope she stabilizes completely in the next day or so, then there would be virtually no risk to a delivery."

"And Jack?" Ianto asked quietly.

The Doctor shook his head, carding his fingers lightly through the soft, dark hair.

"He feels so far away Ianto, his consciousness is barely a spark on the edge of mine. He's stable, at the moment, he's fighting to hold on,  that's all that matters right now."

There was a soft whimper, and Bobby shifted against the couch, his heart rate picking up as he started to wake. The Doctor picked up the teddy bear that Ianto's parents had given Bobby for Christmas from the bottom of the couch, slipping it into his son's arms as he opened his eyes. He looked up at them from big, dazed eyes, clutching his favored toy tightly, and the Doctor leaned down and kissed his forehead lightly.

"Hey Bobby. Papa and Ianto have been worried about you." He said, smoothing down the light hair which was already starting to show signs of being just as unruly as the Doctor's own.

"Want mama." Bobby whined.

"Mama is sleeping. He's poorly too right now." The Doctor said gently, making sure he was positioned so that Bobby couldn't see Jack, and the equipment surrounding him.

"Ianto, why don't you take Bobby to the other room, through there, so he can go back to sleep without being disturbed." The Doctor said. Ianto nodded quickly, gathering Bobby up and carrying him out, making sure he too blocked the view of Jack.

"Went out like a light again the minute I put him in the crib. What about monitors?"

"All the beds in the medbay have built in biosensors, the monitor screens for the crib are in here." The Doctor reassured him.

"Is there anything I can do, or get you?"

"No, thanks Ianto. I just want to sit with him." The Doctor said, slumping back into the chair beside Jack, and wrapping his hand around the chilled hand of his mate.

"OK, I'll leave you alone for now, but I'm coming back in a couple of hours, and if you won't go and sleep, then at the very least you will go and eat." Ianto said firmly.

"All right." The Doctor said with a faint smile.

He heard the door close behind Ianto and closed his eyes, once again focusing on the faint spark of his lovers consciousness, but it had not brightened since the last time.

"Come on Jack. Time to wake up." He sighed, lifting Jack's hand and kissing his knuckles. There was no reaction from his lover, and the Doctor sighed, pressing the back of his free hand to Jack's cheek.

"OK, you sleep a little longer, I can wait." He said, carding through the dark hair again.

He leaned his head against Jack's shoulder, and closed his eyes, not noticing as he drifted off to sleep.

As soon as he was asleep, he dreamed of the day they landed on Alcath II, deciding to take a walk through the wildflower meadow they had landed in. Bobby had fallen first, collapsing mere seconds after scratching his little hand on one of the thorned flowers clumped together. Jack had moved surprisingly fast for someone who was over eight months pregnant, and had been the first one to Bobby, but in his haste, one of the thorns had caught him too, and he had gone down as fast as Bobby had.

The Doctor woke with a start, checking all the monitors to make sure his family was still alive, scrubbing his hands over his face.
He realized Jack's eyes were open, watching him fuzzily.

"Jack? You with me?" He asked, Jack blinked and nodded, and the Doctor quickly disconnected the breathing support.

"How do you feel?"

"Tired, ache." Jack complained, his voice thick and slightly slurred.

"I'm not surprised. Those damn flowers had poison thorns." The Doctor said, leaning close enough to press his forehead to Jack's, feeling the spark almost back to full intensity.

"Bobby, and the baby?" Jack asked, and the Doctor sensed alarm.

"Bobby is better off than you. He woke up a couple of hours ago. He's next door, so I can monitor him for a while longer. The baby will be OK, as long as you don't go into labor in the next couple of days. After that the last of the poison should have been purged from her system too."

"Not hurt her?"

"No, you bore the brunt of the effects for both of you. She'll be OK."

"Good." Jack said, his eyes starting to close again. He smiled faintly as the Doctor leaned over to kiss him, and then drifted off.

The Doctor looked up as he felt Ianto's hand on his shoulder again.

"They're all out of danger now, yes?" Ianto asked.

"Yes." The Doctor said.

"Good, then I can watch them for a while. Go and eat something, then get a couple of hours sleep. He doesn't need to be worrying about you exhausting yourself while he's already worrying about his children."

The Doctor nodded and pushed himself to his feet, groaning softly.

"Thanks Ianto." The Doctor said, squeezing Ianto's shoulder and leaving the room.

Ianto went to check on Bobby, who was still sleeping soundly, and then pulled the chair into a position where he could watch both of his charges.

Am I the only one just seeing the letter N? Is it meant to mean something and I'm being dense at 1am or is my computer messed up?
