************************************
Rose hadn’t gone very far, Jack found her sitting on a low wall that surrounded the small play area, crying as she half watched the little kids playing on the swings.
“You going to tell me what’s up?” Jack asked.
“If I hadn’t come back when I did this morning, would you and he have been there when I did come back, or would I have found the TARDIS gone?”
“What?”
“Well, he has you now, he’s no longer alone. What would he want a stupid ape like me for?”
“Rose, he would never leave you behind until you were ready to leave, how could you think that? You were there for him when he was at his lowest ebb, and he isn’t going to cast you aside. He cares about you, I care about you. Do you really think we would do something so awful?” He asked, hurt.
She looked at him, scrubbing the tears away with her sleeve.
“It just seems that he’s tolerated me a lot of the time, silly ape, always doing the wrong thing, always saying the wrong thing, nearly destroying the world. I got him killed once; he was killed by a Reaper because I didn’t listen to what he told me. Now he has you, another Time Lord, and I just thought…..”
“Rose, I nearly destroyed the world as well, and my motives were nowhere near as good as yours. You were saving someone you cared about, and yes it was silly, but you learned your lesson. I did it for credits, and to get back at my former employers. And you saved his life too, when you first met, didn’t you?”
“You saved his life too, yesterday.”
“That doesn’t even begin to measure up to what you have done for him. Rose, the thought of leaving you behind never even crossed his mind. Do you know what we were talking about before you came in, with your frankly scary mother and her poking and her temper?”
“What?”
“Where you might like to go next.”
“Oh.” She looked down at the pavement, kicking her heels back against the wall for a long moment.
“You’re not going to tell him what I thought, are you?”
“If you don’t want me to, but wouldn’t it be better if he could reassure you what I’ve told you is true?”
“He won’t, he doesn’t do all that touchy feely stuff, he’ll just think I’m being silly.”
He put an arm around her shoulders, pulling her against his side in a quick hug.
“So are you all right now?”
“I suppose. I was being silly, wasn’t I?”
“Yeah, next time, ask when you’re feeling insecure.” He grinned, leaning over to kiss the top of her head.
“Shall we go back now, make sure Mickey and your mother haven’t killed him?”
“I’m surprised Mickey let you come after me,” she said as she swung her legs over the wall and stood up. She looked back as she heard a muffled choking nose, and saw Jack trying not to laugh.
“Jack, what did you do to him?” She asked.
“Nothing just stopped him moving.” He grinned.
“How?”
“A teeny tiny bit of telekinesis,” Jack said with a grin.
She giggled slightly as she allowed him to lead her back to the TARDIS, pulling him to a halt just before they reached it.
“Does my face look OK? You can’t tell I’ve been crying?”
“We knew you were crying when you left the TARDIS Rose, you look fine,” he said, guiding her to the doors and pushing her in ahead of him.
“Got her, she’s fine,” he said with a sigh as three pairs of eyes zeroed in on the door.
“Rose, love, where did you run off to? We were worried,” Jackie said as she rushed over to her daughter.
“I’m fine mum, the last couple of days have just been a little stressful, I needed a minute,” Rose assured her mother, rolling her eyes.
The Doctor cast a quick look at Jack, his eyebrow rising in a silent question. The younger man shook his head to indicate there was nothing urgent for him to worry about; the Doctor quirked one corner of his mouth in acceptance, then stepped over to where Jackie and Mickey were hovering over Rose.
“Right, so everyone is happy that everyone else is safe and whole? Good, can we get on about our business now then please?” He asked, shooing Mickey and Jackie toward the door before they could get a word out. Rose turned away to hide a snicker as the two of them were politely (almost) and firmly ushered out of the door. Jack hit the lock to stop them coming back in, and the three of them dissolved into laughter.
“God, the look on their faces,” Rose said through her giggles.
“Well, honestly. They’d just expect us to hang around all day, if they had their way,” the Doctor said, moving to the console, and waving Jack to take the controls on the other side.
“So, where are we off to?” Rose asked.
“It’s a surprise, but Jack picked the planet, so there should be no running for your life involved, before you start, Rose Marion Tyler,” he looked her over thoughtfully. “Are you sure you’re all right?”
“I’m fine, really. It was just a bad few days, thinking you were going to die, or Jack was going to have to risk himself to save you. I just got a bit silly for a minute, but everything is fine now,” she said earnestly, giving him a small smile.
“All right, it’s going to be at least an hour before we land, so if there’s anything you need to do, now is the time to do it,” he told the two across the console from him.
“Well, I’m going to grab a shower,” Rose said, heading toward the door.
“You scared the life out of Mickey, grabbing him that way you know,” the Doctor said after Rose had left the room.
“Good, he deserves it. She deserves someone better than that damp squib.”
“She had hopes of either you or me, I think, and as far as I know, they’re not actually seeing each other anymore. To be fair though, he does have his moments, he just doesn’t get much chance to shine. Get Rose to tell you about
Jack shrugged, looking down at the console, and the Doctor thought he caught an uncomfortable look on his face.
“What is it? Do you like Rose that way?” The Doctor asked, feeling nerves twisting his hearts. He didn’t want Jack to like Rose, he wanted Jack to like him, and the TARDIS had seemed so sure he did.
“No, I’m not attracted to Rose, there’s someone else I like. I just….do you like her?”
“Not in a romantic sense, no, there’s someone I’m attracted to, but it isn’t her.”
Neither of them could look up to meet the others eyes, and an uncomfortable silence grew as neither of them had the courage to voice the question on their minds. The TARDIS quickly got annoyed with their dithering, and shook the floor hard. The Doctor had gotten just enough warning to brace himself between the console and the railing, but Jack was caught completely unawares, and was flung flat on his back on the floor.
“Jack,” the Doctor called, alarmed, hurrying across to him and kneeling at his side on the now still decking. Jack was staring at the ceiling, eyes wide with surprise as he tried to catch his breath.
“Are you all right?”
“Sure, fine. The TARDIS put a force field or something between me and the deck, I just got winded,” Jack said, his gaze switching from the ceiling to look at the saturnine face above him.
“There was no turbulence on the screens, what happened?” Jack asked.
The Doctor rose and extended a hand to pull Jack to his feet. The younger Time Lord ended up face to face with him, close enough that the Doctor could feel his breathing.
“I think that may have been her way of banging our heads together,” the Doctor finally said, very quietly. He couldn’t seem to drag his eyes away from the ocean colored eyes that just minutes ago he hadn’t been able to meet.
“Why?” Jack murmured softly, his own gaze just as caught.
Even as the Doctor leaned forward, closer to Jack, a part of his mind was screaming loudly –this is a hugely bad idea- the Doctor told that part of his mind to shut the hell up if it had nothing useful to say, and completed the movement, his lips gently brushing over Jack’s lips. Jack whimpered softly, deep in his throat, and swayed forwards, deepening the contact, his hands sliding up the leather-clad arms to rest on the older man’s shoulders as the Doctor gripped his hips, pulling them closer together.
“What the hell is going on around here?” Rose’s voice cut through the room, making the Doctor jump away from Jack guiltily and swing toward the door.
