Ianto lay on his side in Jack’s narrow bed, looking at the older man sprawled boneless on his back across the rest of the mattress. Jack was actually asleep for once, and Ianto supposed it had been a pretty tiring day for him, what with catching up with them in the blowfish chase, meeting an old friend, chasing halfway around Cardiff looking for those bloody cylinders, being killed by said friend and eventually chasing him across Cardiff to rescue Gwen.

Ianto stroked his fingers lightly through Jack’s hair, wondering what Jack had in mind for the date he had asked him on. He shook his head, snorting to himself. He had sworn to himself over and over that if Jack came back, he wasn’t going to let him pick up where they had left off, that if he wanted Ianto back he would have to work for it, and here he was, in his bed already. Jack had looked so lost, so alone though, when they had all started to leave, that he hadn’t had the heart to leave him all alone. Something about what John Hart had said before he left had torn a hole in Jack’s usual defenses. He hadn’t even attempted to initiate anything with Ianto when he had got him in this bed, he had just wanted to be held.

“Who is Grey Jack? Why did that shake you up so much?” Ianto whispered, his thumb brushing lightly over Jack’s cheek.

Jack stirred at the sound of his voice, tired blue eyes fluttering open to meet Ianto’s eyes.

“Yan?”

“Sorry Jack, I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“S’alright. What’s up, why are you awake?” Jack asked softly, rubbing at his eyes.

“I…..I was……it doesn’t matter.” Ianto backed off, he didn’t want to hurt Jack any more than he already had been since his return.

“You were wondering about what John said.” Jack finished for him.

Ianto looked down at the sheet, his fingers picking at the cotton as he nodded. Jack reached out and cupped the side of Ianto’s face in one big hand, tilting his head back up enough to look into his eyes.

“Which bit of what he said Yan?”

“Doesn’t matter. You didn’t want to talk about it before, I don’t want to hurt you Jack.”

“Ah, that part then. I just didn’t want to talk about it with the others Yan, it’s none of their business. You’re not them, you’re important to me. I gave up the universe for you, Ianto Jones.”

Ianto leaned down and kissed his forehead then, appreciating Jack’s repeating that he had come back for him, without having to tack on the ‘all of you’ to appease the others.

“All right, who or what is Grey?” Ianto asked softly, settling his head on one hand while the other rested lightly over Jack’s heart.

“Grayson, I never approved of John’s habit of shortening his name.”

“And yet, you shorten mine.” Ianto chided with a small smile.

“Yes, I do, and would your mother approve if she heard me do it? Grayson is my son.”

“What?” Ianto asked, floored. He had never heard Jack mention even liking children, let alone having a child.

“The time loop he mentioned we were stuck in, repeating the same couple of days over and over again for all that time.”

“He said it was like being married.”

“Yes. After we had been stuck in there for a couple of months, my contraceptive implant ran out, and I ended up pregnant. I was petrified, I had been warned so many times that if I ever wanted to have a child, I should make sure it was under strict medical supervision. Even in my time, male pregnancy was almost unknown, and very risky, and there I was, trapped on a small ship, with basic medical supplies, stuck in a time loop, so there was no way to get help from outside, and pregnant. I couldn’t bring myself to terminate though.”

“Why not?” Ianto asked gently.

“I’d watched my parents try for years to have another baby, seen how devastated they were every time nothing happened, or my mother miscarried. I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t wipe out a helpless life, even if it meant risking my own. John didn’t understand, I think that was when it really started to fall apart between me and him, when I started to hate him. Despite the risks the healers had always talked about, the pregnancy actually went pretty smoothly, and Grayson was perfect when he was born, so beautiful. It got harder after that, trying to bring up a baby in a ship not much bigger than this room, but we managed, we’d found a planet, a few hours inside the range we could manage before the loop kicked in, so every couple of loops, instead of working to break it, we’d head there, to get supplies for our son, and let him spend a little time on a planet instead of a ship.”

“How did you get out of it?”

“I don’t know, no one knows for sure. The Time Agency found our ship drifting, outside the system we’d been caught up in. All three of us were unconscious, they said it took days to wake us up, we were back at the Agency by then. One of the Temporal Science guys thought the loop might have been broken when a more powerful time ship blasted through the area, but there was no way to know for sure. The day we were released from medical was the last time I saw John until now, he went straight back out there, and I was going to resign to look after my son.” Jack’s voice broke as he wiped a stray tear away.

“So what went wrong?”

“They wanted me to go on just one more mission, something that they said I was the best agent for. Grayson was to be left with my mother until I came back. They came to say goodbye in the docking bay, before I left, Grayson didn’t want me to go, he was crying so much, and trying to hold onto my hand to stop me leaving. My mother had to take him out of the room, and that was the last I ever saw of him, of either of them. I remember the mission I was sent on, I remember setting course for the Agency two weeks after I left, and then suddenly I’m waking up, and its two years later. After the row with them about my stolen memories, and quitting, I knew I would have to get Grayson and my mother out of their way, get them somewhere safe, but the house was abandoned.”

“You never found out what had happened to them?”

“One of the people in the next house said that they had heard she had been killed a month after Grayson went to live with her, but no one could, or would, tell me what had happened to my son. Computer records for him all stopped the day my mother died, no death certificate, no adoption record, nothing. He just vanished without a trace.”

“I am so sorry.” Ianto breathed, the hand that rested over Jack’s heart stroking lightly.

“I just always hoped that somehow it was someone who wanted to keep him safe that took him, there were never any threats made, never any ransom demands. If John claims he’s seen him, then he must be alive, and hopefully safe, somewhere.”

“There must be some way you can find him Jack.”

“No, he’s well out of my reach here.”

“But maybe your friend the Doctor could help you, go back to the day he vanished, and see who took him.”

“I can’t, Ianto.”

“Why not?”

“What if it was me who hid him Yan? Or if I arranged for him to be hidden? I have to find some way to get my missing time back first, to know what happened. Yes, there is a chance that the Doctor might someday be able to help me find him, but that is a long way off. I have three thousand years to work out a way to get my memories back, and find out where my son is, there’s no need to risk him by rushing it.”

Ianto leaned down and kissed Jack lightly on the lips.

“Thank you for telling me, Jack. You will find him one day, I’m sure you will.”

Jack silently pulled Ianto into a tight embrace, kissing him back tenderly.

“I love you, Ianto Jones. Your faith in me keeps me sane.”

“You were sane, and I missed it?” Ianto couldn’t help asking, and he was rewarded with a genuine smile from Jack.

“Stick around, and it might happen again.”

“I’m not going anywhere.” Ianto promised him, tightening his own embrace.

Epilogue

5070, Talibad IV,  Southern Continent.

Jack and the Doctor stepped out of the TARDIS on the edge of the small town, looking around at the sun drenched parkland that surrounded the houses.

“Are you sure you don’t mind doing this, Doctor?” Jack asked.

“He’s your son Jack. I’ve had you to myself for over two and a half thousand years, I think I can share you now.” The Doctor smiled.

Jack looked over at his lover with a smile, still in his tenth regeneration, he was finally starting to show the touch of time. His brown hair, still wild and untamed, was streaked with hints of grey, and laugh lines had gathered at the corner of his eyes. Still, at least since Jack had rejoined him in 2109, he hadn’t run through regenerations at the rate he had previously.

“I’m just sorry it took so long to find a way to get your memories back, that you have had to wait so long to reclaim your son,” the Doctor said softly, stepping up to Jack’s side and taking his hand.

“We both have centuries ahead of us, Doctor. The length of the journey doesn’t matter as much as reaching the destination,” Jack said with a slight smile.

They started walking, Jack’s finally restored memory leading his feet to a spot he hadn’t seen in millennia. Pulling the Doctor to a halt in a small copse, they watched and waited. A rustle through the trees, and a young couple appeared, looking around cautiously.

“Are you sure this is safe, Davon?” The young woman asked.

“Cassia, he’s my cousin, he won’t hurt us. If he needs help, it must be serious.”

“But there are wanted notices for him over nine systems.”

“I don’t believe what they say Cassia. He would never kill his mother, she meant the world to him. Please, trust me, he is not what they are saying, he is not a murderer.”

More rustling, and a younger Jack appeared, carrying a small, light haired boy in his arms.

“Jack.”

“Davon, I don’t have much time, I have to be gone before they track my ship. This is Grayson, my son. I need to leave him with you, I need him to be safe.”

“For how long?” Cassia asked as the boy lifted his head from Jack’s shoulder, looking at them through tear reddened eyes.

“I don’t know. I’ll be back for him as soon as I figure out what they’re really up to, why they’re doing this. Can I trust you?”

“Of course you can,” Davon said, moving over to Jack.

“Grayson, I have to go. I promise I will come back for you as soon as I can,” Jack said to the boy, tears streaming down his own face.

“Love you Daddy.” Grayson sobbed as he was lifted out of Jack’s arms.

“I love you too, baby. I always will.” Jack promised, before darting off back the way he had come.

“Should we wait a while?” The Doctor whispered, feeling Jack’s body shaking with suppressed tears of his own.

“No.” Jack whispered back, stepping forward. The Doctor quickly followed.

“Jack? What, how?” Davon looked startled, his gaze jumping from this Jack to the direction the younger Jack had run in.

“He’s older,” Cassia said calmly. Jack was glad she had no idea how much older.

“Daddy.” Grayson yelled, struggling out of Davon’s arms and running over. Jack swept him up in his arms, burying his face in his son’s hair and giving in to the tears. The Doctor moved in protectively at his side as the others came closer.

“You dealt with the problem then?” Davon asked, his eyes once more on the path the younger Jack had taken.

“Eventually, yes.” Jack shrugged, looking up.

“Good. Who’s your new friend?” Davon asked, taking Cassia’s hand.

“This is the Doctor, he helped get me back here today. You’re going to love his ship, Grayson,” and she’s going to love you he added silently to himself.

“Well, I’m glad everything worked out. Take care, Jack.”

“You too.”

The young couple left, and the others started back toward the TARDIS.

“Are you going to be my other daddy?” Grayson asked the Doctor as they walked, noticing that the Doctor had once more taken Jack’s free hand.

“Yes, yes I am, Grayson,” the Doctor said, shooting a bright grin over at Jack and the boy. The TARDIS came into view, and the Doctor found he couldn’t wait to show the newest member of his family the stars.

The End.

awwwwwwwww *hugs*

This was so lovely! I wish that Grey was Jack's son for real, but am not sure RTD will hear our prayers :)

Ianto was amazing and so sad at the same time, knowing that he will probably never get to meet Grey or stay with Jack forever *sniff*

Well done!

Thank you, glad you liked it.

I hope RTD goes this way too, that we'll get to see Jack being 'mummy' even if its just for a little while.

Glad you liked my Ianto too.

Oh that was beautiful!

Damnit you've made me cry! But they're happy tears so I forgive you. Nice explanation for the grey comment.

You managed to get two of my favorite ships in the same fic- Jack/Ianto and Jack/The Doctor! Great job, I loved who "Gray" ended up being and how Ianto just accepted it all and supported Jack. And the idea of The Doctor and Jack travelling for so long together just warms my heart- cause Jack is the perfect companion, isn't he? And there's a happy ending- I love it!

:-)) Thank you, really glad you like it. Jack really is the perfect companion for the Doctor, but I think thats why he runs from him. He can't use the brevity of the human lifespan as an excuse not to get involved, can he? Jack will outlive him.

Aww, that was very sweet and nicely done. I enjoyed the comfort that Ianto gave to Jack. I am glad you let us know that Jack found his son instead of leaving it up in the air for the reader to decide. Once again you've written a wonderful piece of fiction.
