Closure

***

The Doctor wandered into the gardens, looking for Jack. The young immortal had taken to spending a lot of time in here when they were in transit. Since they had discovered that Jack was pregnant, the Doctor had become very protective of his mate, a little over-protective, if he was honest with himself, and poor Jack was starting to get a little bored.

He caught sight of Jack near the fountain, and had to smile. Jack was sitting in the sweet smelling grass, his shirt beside him on the ground, one hand trailing in the water the other rubbing absently over the gentle swelling of his stomach.

Jack jumped as the Doctor knelt beside him and placed one hand over his on the small bump.

"I've been driving you batty, haven't I?"

"A bit." Jack admitted, leaning into him.

"I'm sorry. I just don't want anything to happen to you, either of you." The Doctor said. He sat down behind Jack, his legs bracketing those of the younger man and settled Jack back against his chest, one hand still resting over Jack's stomach and the other petting the warm skin of his arm lightly.

"I know, and I have no desire at all to go running around getting chased and shot at, but I can't stay cooped up inside the TARDIS for the next few months. You know she won't take us anywhere she knows there's a possible threat to our safety.”

”Yeah, but it’s the threats we don’t know about that worry me. Why, did you have somewhere in mind that you wanted to visit?”

Jack fidgeted, and looked over at the fountain, his shoulders hunching slightly.

“Jack, you know you never have to be afraid to say anything to me, don’t you?”

“I was wondering…I wanted……” Jack swallowed hard and shuddered to a halt, and the Doctor could feel his misery resonating across the link.

“Jack?”

“I haven’t been to the grave since the day they were buried.” Jack whispered.

“You want to go there?”

“If that’s OK with you.”

“Of course it is. Do we need to go somewhere and get flowers or something?” The Doctor asked, kissing the back of his neck lightly.

“Not cut flowers, I …” Jack stopped again, and the Doctor could feel a blush heating his skin. Jack pulled away from him, and scrambled to his feet, looking down at his lover.

“This way.” Jack said, heading around the edge of the fountain, deeper into the gardens. Confused, the Doctor got up and followed him, wondering where they were going. Jack carefully pushed some vines aside, and led the way into a secluded little grove.

There was a soft, delicate tinkling sound, and for a moment, the Doctor thought the TARDIS had created another water feature for Jack, and then his jaw dropped.

“Axelian crystal roses. Where in heavens name did they come from?” He breathed, looking at the small collection of crystalline flowers. The tiny rose tree closest to him had blood red petals that reflected the low light back like the purest claret. Jack knelt by the one closest to him, a faint peach blush dusting the otherwise clear crystals and brushed one of the blossoms with his fingertip, setting it chiming.

“The Axelian Ishmar gave me six crystals years ago, when I was still with the Agency. I saved his son from a raid. The TARDIS gave me the perfect growing conditions for them, but I never thought that all six would take. She must have helped them along, I think. The red one, over by you, I want to plant it at the grave.”

“Oh Jack, they’re beautiful. How will it survive though?”

“I built a force field generator. Rain and sun will get through, but it will be protected from extremes of the weather, or any other type of threat.”

“You amaze me, Jack Harkness.” The Doctor smiled, going over and kissing him tenderly.

“So, where are we going?” He asked Jack when he let him up for air.

“Heisling colony. 5101, summer.”

“Why then?”

“Lilly would have been eighteen that summer, if she had lived.”

“OK. Are you coming to the console room now?”

“No, I’ll be there as soon as I have the rose ready to be moved.”

“Right. Take it easy love.”

The Doctor smiled at Jack as he came into the console room, carrying the rose carefully with the force field protecting the pot it was living in for the move.

“Were here.” He said.

“Already?” Jack asked.

“It wasn’t far from where we were. Are you ready?”

“As I’ll ever be.” Jack said.

The sun was setting as they reached the cemetery, leaving the place in shadow.

“We can come back in the morning.” The Doctor offered.

“No, this is fine.” Jack said his feet following the path to the graves easily even after over 200 years for him. He stopped in front of the black marble stone, simply inscribed.

Elizabeth Harkness
5035 – 5083
Lillian Harkness
5083 – 5083

Much loved and taken
Far too soon.

He knelt down and ran his fingers over the carved letters, feeling the Doctor step up to his shoulder and brushing light fingers across his neck.

“Do you want me to leave you for a while Jack?” He asked.

“No, stay.” Jack said, catching his hand.

“OK.” The Doctor said, bending to kiss him on the top of his head.

“Mom, Lilly, I really hope I’m wrong, and there is something beyond death, that you two are still together. I brought you a gift, something very rare, just like you two.” He said. He worked in silence to plant the rose at the foot of the stone and set up the force field to protect it.

“I don’t know when, if ever, I’ll be able to get back, but I just want you to know that I never meant to leave you two for so long. Things got a little out of hand in my life, but its going to be OK now. I finally met someone who loves me for me. This is the Doctor, he’s an amazing person, and we’re bonded. Lilly, this is your little brother or sister.” Jack said, stroking his bump gently.

“I love you both so much.” He said, caressing the stone again.

There were footsteps along the path, and a man’s voice.

“Who’s there?” The man asked.

“I’m sorry, are we stopping you locking up?” The Doctor asked, helping Jack get up.

“No, that grave is the last connection I have to someone I treated very badly. Lillian should have been my daughter, but I ran away.”

“Lilly is nothing to do with you David, you’re not wanted here.” Jack said quietly.

“Jack, my God Jack, is that you?” The man stepped forward so they could see him in the fading light, and reached out toward Jack. Jack took one step back out of reach of the hand and raised his head, locking cold eyes on the man with the weight of his two centuries of life.

“My God Jack, what happened to you? You never used to be that cold.”

“I grew up. I’m not that impressionable little fifteen year old anymore. You charmed your way into my bed once, but your charm hid a snake. Leave David, Lilly was better off without you. At least my mom and I loved her, you, you were in love with yourself and the idea you could bed a fifteen year old virgin. You lost any right over Lilly the day you called me a freak. Leave.”

The man stepped forward again, but this time, Jack held his ground, and the man’s eyes widened.

“You’re pregnant.” He said.

The Doctor stepped in then, irked by this mans persistence.

“That is none of your concern, and Jack had asked you several times to leave.”

“Who are you?”

“He’s my mate, I’m bonded to him.” Jack said icily.

“Oh, right. I’m sorry Jack, for everything.” The man said, turning and vanishing back
into the shadows.

“Are you alright Jack?” The Doctor asked quietly.

“I’m….. actually, I’m good. He’s nothing, he can’t hurt me anymore, and Lilly is well beyond his reach.” Jack said. He turned and slipped his arms around the Doctor.

“Let’s go home.”

“Sure?”

“Yeah. Just promise me one thing Doctor.”

"What?”

“Stop cosseting me. I’m pregnant, not fragile.”

“I promise.” He said with a laugh, keeping his arm around Jack’s waist as they left the cemetery, heading for the TARDIS.

“Thanks Doctor, I needed this chance to lay my ghosts.”

“Everyone needs closure Jack, and you helped me lay my ghosts too you know.”

“Then, I guess we’re good for each other aren’t we?”

"The best.” The Doctor laughed, squeezing him gently.

They stepped into the TARDIS and left the past behind.

I somehow managed to miss this one - it's every bit as gorgeous as the others. Love this series *pats Jack for being cute and Doc for being protective*
