Jack finally realized that the Doctor looked stunned, and stopped in front of the older man, looking at him intently.
“Are you ok Doctor?”
The Doctor jumped, startled, his eyes snapping up to meet the other mans eyes.
“What?”
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost Doctor, what is it?”
“It’s just this, I haven’t seen one in a very long time. Where did you get it?” He asked his fingers almost, but not quite touching the watch.
Jack reached out and picked it up, the gold chain running through his fingers lightly as he looked at the engraving on the casing, some unidentifiable sadness in his eyes.
“Do you mind if we switch to telepathy? My throat is getting sore.”
“Sure, but if you want to rest, you can. We don’t have to talk about this if you don’t want to.”
*No, its ok,* Jack said, sitting down on his bed and looking at the watch in his hands. The Doctor hesitated for a moment, and then sat beside Jack on the bed, earning himself a soft smile from Jack.
*They said it was the only thing I had on me when they found me. The colony on the
*Did they ever find out where you came from?*
*No, they had the genetic records of everyone in the colony on file, and there was no match to any of them. They eventually decided that I must have wandered or run away from someone who landed there for a while, they never came back to look for me, so I was adopted, by a couple from the colony. I figured this must have belonged to my father or someone close to me, I’ve always kept it with me since, even though it’s broken. My lucky charm.*
*Lucky? And what’s wrong with it?*
*It doesn’t open, never has. I keep thinking that I should get it repaired, but I never seem to get round to it, and what does it matter, really, this is the way it’s always been. I could so easily have died in that forest before I was found, there were predators that would have found me a tasty snack, I could have frozen to death, and I could have broken my neck falling down a ravine.*
*Your lucky charm.* The Doctor agreed.
He glanced over at Jack’s profile, wondering if he should tell him what he thought the watch was what it could mean. He decided against it, if Jack really was another Time Lord, then he had to figure out the secret of the watch himself, and if he wasn’t, it didn’t matter anyway. The Doctor would love to no longer be the last of the Time Lords, but pushing Jack to find out if he was or not would be a selfish whim.
*It must have been hard, not knowing anything about your own past,* he finally said.
*It was harder growing up the only telepath on a mind blind world. I had no one to teach me shielding. The first time we were visited by telepaths, I almost went insane.*
*You have very strong shielding now, I can feel that when you release it.*
*Yeah, the visitors, Felkanians, started my training, gave me shields, and the Time Agency helped me augment them.*
*The Agency knew how strong you were?*
*Do I look stupid? I allowed them to measure my psi potential with my shields up. The shielding they taught me for what they assumed was my level gave me the additional strength.*
Jack leaned his head back against the wall, shutting his eyes, and the Doctor reached over and rested a hand on his wrist.
“You’re tired Jack, get some rest. I’ll come and wake you in a couple of hours, and show you a little more of the TARDIS.”
Jack nodded and shuffled down so he was lying flat on the bed, and the Doctor got up, folding the cover over him. Jack smiled faintly, but he was already drifting off, the watch still held tightly in his hand. The Doctor looked at him for a long moment, watching him sleep, wondering, and then he shook it off and slipped out of the room.
Rose was in the console room when he got there, she was sitting in the seat, her feet curled under her, drinking a mug of tea.
“Where’s Jack? I thought you were letting him up today.”
“He was up for a while, he’s been to the wardrobe room to find some clothes, but he’s sleeping again now. I’ll get him up in a while to do the grand tour.”
“Are you all right? You look kind of distracted.”
“Hmm? Oh, yes, I’m fine, thanks Rose. Why don’t you give your mum a ring, I thought it was about time to go and see her.”
“What? You never take me to see my mum voluntarily, I usually have to nag you. What’s going on?”
“I just thought you might like to see her. If you don’t want to, we can go somewhere else.”
“No, I’d love to see her, I’ll go and ring her now.”
Rose, jumped out of the chair, and hurried off to her room to grab her phone, taking her mug of tea with her. The Doctor sank into the now vacant seat, staring at the console.
“Do you know the answer? Is he a Time Lord or not, old girl?” He asked softly, not really surprised when the TARDIS didn’t give him a hint one way or the other.
**
Jack was just starting to wake up when the Doctor went back to his room a couple of hours later.
“We’re landing in about an hour, so that Rose can visit her mum. We’ll have to make an appearance, Jackie will want to meet you, then we can come back while they spend some time together, and we can do the tour of the TARDIS. If you’re feeling up to it that is.”
“Sure, why not. I want to grab a shower first.” Jack croaked, obviously still half asleep.
“Of course, we have plenty of time. I’ll get a protein shake ready for you.”
He smiled at the face Jack pulled, and left him to it as he stumbled out of bed, heading for the bathroom.
Jack felt much more awake after he had showered, he padded through to his bedroom and pulled on a pair of jeans, a tee shirt and his boots, then put his pocket watch in the inside pocket of his duster as he picked it up. Stepping out of his room, he looked up and down the long white corridor, and realized he had no idea which way he should be going. He knew the way to the wardrobe room, and the med bay, and that was it. He felt a soft touch against the barriers in his mind, and after a momentary hesitation, he relaxed his shields enough to let the TARDIS in, allowing her to establish the same link she had with all the people who came onto the ship which allowed her to translate for them, and nudge them in the right direction in the endless corridors if she chose to.
*Thank you.* He sent, and he felt her amusement and pleasure dance over his mind as she guided him to the kitchen.
“Hello, I was just about to come and get you. How did you find your way here?” The Doctor asked in surprise as he finished mixing the shake.
“The pretty lady brought me.” Jack croaked with a grin, stroking the wall lightly.
“Stop flirting with my ship.” The Doctor growled, wondering even as he did where exactly the flare of jealousy was directed. They both felt the TARDIS laugh that time, and Jack grinned, shaking his head.
“I like her sense of humor,” he said with a rasp.
“Behave, drink this,” the Doctor said, but he was smiling too now.
Jack pulled a face again, and took the shake, downing it as fast as he could.
“That really is dreadful,” he said.
“I know, you won’t have to put up with it too much longer, you’re healing well.”
“Good.”
Rose bounced in then, grinning broadly at Jack.
“Glad to see you up and around Captain.”
“Thank you.”
“My mum can’t wait to meet you, she wanted us all to have lunch with her.”
“Rose, Jack still can’t eat,” the Doctor said with a sigh.
“I told her that, so she said that she will settle for all of us sitting down with a cup of tea. Mickey might turn up later too, she said she was going to give him a ring, let him know we were coming.”
“Oh, joy.” Was the Doctor’s only comment on that.
“Who’s Mickey?” Jack asked.
“My boyfriend, sort of.” Rose shrugged.
*Sort of?* Jack sent to the Doctor, who gave him the mental equivalent of a shrug. He had long given up on trying to figure out where Rose and Mickey stood.
“Well, we’ll be arriving soon, are we all ready?” He said aloud.
“Oh yes,” Rose said, excited about seeing her mum, and Jack nodded.
“Good,” the Doctor said, sighing mentally as he added to himself ‘can’t wait.’ He heard a psychic snort, and realized he had sent it through the still open link to Jack. Jack winked at him, and withdrew the contact, and the Doctor realized with a start that he missed the connection, he was very quickly growing used to having the younger mind against his own.
