*******************************
The Doctor found that Jack was a truly challenging chess opponent, not quite as unpredictable as Fitz had been, but with a better sense of strategy, which meant for the second time in his lives, the Doctor had found a non Gallifreyan who was a real challenge.
*You’re thinking about him again.* Jack sent idly as he considered his next move.
*You and he are the only people who have challenged me at chess in more centuries than I care to think about.*
*Do you want to talk about him?*
*Fitz was……different. I picked him up in the 1960’s and in many ways he was a man of that time, yet in others…..he accepted so easily. Aliens, ‘yeah, whatever’. You’re going to die, ‘if you say so’. I…..I got him killed several times, I always managed to get him back one way or another, but still, and he never resented it. He stuck with me to the bitter end.*
*You lost him to the time war?*
*Yes. I tried so many times to persuade him to go, to let me take him somewhere safe, and he wouldn’t go. He died in the fall of Gallifrey.*
*He loved you.* Jack suggested, finally making a move.
*Probably. That regeneration had even more issues than this one though, I didn’t really see it.*
*You must have loved him a little, in your own way.*
*What makes you say that? Check, by the way.* The Doctor moved a bishop.
*I saw him in your mind when you were thinking of him just then, you’re wearing his jacket. Check mate.* Jack moved a knight, and the Doctor picked up a psychic grin as well as a physical one.
*All right, enough for one night, you need to rest. And you could be right, about Fitz, I guess I did care about him more than a lot of the companions who came before him,* the Doctor said, putting the board on a counter to the side of the room, out of the way.
*Good night, Jack.*
*Good night, Doctor.*
The Doctor turned the lights down as he left, and Jack snuggled down under his covers. He hoped he would be able to get up, at least for a while, tomorrow. He hated medical facilities with a passion.
***
The Doctor walked Jack to the room Rose had picked for him the next morning, showing him inside.
“This will be your room, the bathroom is through there. Your coat is hanging up in the closet, but I’m afraid the rest of your clothes were ruined, I had to cut them off. I’ll show you the wardrobe room now, and you can see if you can find anything you like to do you until we go somewhere to get you stuff of your own.”
“Thanks.” Jack croaked. His voice was raspy and raw still, but the Doctor had decided that he was OK to talk now, though he still didn’t want him to chance eating.
They walked to the wardrobe room, the Doctor making sure he walked slowly enough for Jack to memorize the way, and he showed him in.
“Wow,” Jack rasped, looking at the seemingly endless room.
“The TARDIS will have put the stuff she thinks more likely to please you at this end of the room, but if you want to explore further down, you can.”
Jack stepped into the room, looking at the rails, his fingers gliding lightly over the fabrics as he moved. The Doctor cocked his head to one side with a small frown, the mannerism reminded him of something. He smiled to himself as Jack stopped looking at what he was touching, just feeling the textures of the material. He was reminding him of the way he himself picked out a new look after a regeneration, going for what felt right, instead of a look.
He ended up with jeans, trousers, t-shirts and shirts, all in black, as far as the Doctor could see. As he was walking to the door, he hesitated, his head tilting to one side.
“That wasn’t there a second ago.”
The Doctor looked over and saw a coat rack had appeared by the door, only one coat on it. A duster, looked to be Tarklin cotton, which while light, would be as warm as wool. It was black, and judging by the length would be damn near floor length, even at Jack’s height. At least Rose wouldn’t try to steal it from Jack, the Doctor snorted to himself, watching to see if the TARDIS had guessed right. Jack reached out, his fingers brushing over the coat.
“She put it there for you.” The Doctor prompted. Jack looked at him with a bright grin, lifting the coat down off the rack.
“Thank you,” he said hoarsely, bowing slightly into the wardrobe room. The Doctor could feel the TARDIS’s pleasure at being acknowledged directly, and judging by the faint smile on Jack’s face, he had felt it too.
“She likes you.”
“That’s good, I like her too.” Jack smiled.
“Come on, I’ll walk you back to your room, you’re still healing, and you could do with some rest.”
They walked down the corridor in companionable silence, reaching Jack’s room after a few minutes. The Doctor followed him inside, leaning against the wall by the door, watching as Jack put the clothes away. The last thing he did was reverently lift his RAF greatcoat out of the closet, going through the pockets. Most of the things went straight into the pockets of his new coat, but one item was placed on the bedside table.
The doctor stared in shock at the gold pocket watch that lay so innocuously on the wooden surface of the cabinet, his eyes taking in the oh so familiar engravings with half terrified fascination. He slowly looked up to see Jack still moving idly around the room, unaware of the Time Lord’s focus on him. What was Jack Harkness, ex con-man, ex time agent, doing with a Time Lord pocket watch?

Re: When the dancing is done (part 3)
Glad you're still around too, I hadn't seen anything from you in ages, and I was thinking you had vanished on us. Does this mean we'll be seeing updates on some of your fics? *looks hopeful*

Innocent my foot = you even tease with teh icon
Interesting that you should have the Doctor note the similarities between him after a new regeneration and Jack as he explores his clothing options. Admit it you're secretly the Master and you're tormenting us with clues or red herrings.
You make *cough*Pres.*cough* Bush look innocent. Cliffhangers again. This series is like the first season of Heroes. And the end of each chapter's cliffhanger I was willing (unsuccessfully) the clock to skip ahead to the next week so I could see what happened next. And such a moment to stop on. Though pt.1's is still my favorite (being the sentimental type of Barbara Cartland gal I am) this one with Jack being in possession of a TL watch (and maybe a certain something inside?) has me very, very eager for the next part.

Re: Innocent my foot = you even tease with teh icon
I'm glad it's keeping you on the edge of your seat, it's good for improving posture and reducing back problems, I'll have to endevor to keep you there.
IF the watch is what it seems to be, he may not open it for some time yet, or he could open it in the very next chapter. Oh wait, I'm teasing again, oh well *shrugs and wanders off to plot world domination*

Re: Innocent my foot = you even tease with teh icon
I don't know about it improving my posture. I am looking more like Snoopy when he pretends to be a vulture - hunched over staring hungrily at the screen. lol. I don't know if I'll survive your cliffhangers. They're so good I might have to take a heart regulatory medicine so it doesn't skip too many beats.
You are soooooo bad! Evil teaser/temptress. Bad, bad I say.
Now go to my room and write some more chapters. *snickers*

Re: Innocent my foot = you even tease with teh icon
I was thinking somehow it related to him maybe helping out in the Time War somehow, but the watch makes it look like a piece of a bigger puzzle.
