******************
Tosh was poking at a small device that had come through the rift that morning when she felt someone step up to her shoulder. Jack, she identified without turning, picking up the faint scents of soap, and wool and leather unique to him. She had never yet smelled any kind of cologne on him. Her identification was confirmed a moment later when his arm, bound in the ever-present wrist computer, reached past her shoulder as he plucked the little gizmo from her hand.
“Ah, not something you want to be randomly poking Tosh,” he told her, slipping it into his pants pocked.
“Why, what does it do? Is it a weapon?” She asked.
“Worse.” He laughed, walking off in the direction of his office without actually answering the question.
She frowned in annoyance as she watched him set it on the corner of his desk when he sat down to the pile of reports waiting for him. Since he had come back from his trip with the Doctor, he had been happier, generally, but it was still almost impossible to get a straight answer out of him.
“What’s up?” Gwen asked, catching the look on Tosh’s face and coming over, radiating wide eyed sympathy.
“Oh, Jack just took that thing that turned up this morning. He said it was dangerous, but he wouldn’t tell me what it was,” she said, shrugging.
“He can’t carry on doing that. He should have learned by now that keeping secrets is bad for the rest of the team,” she said, puffing herself up with her usual ‘I am right, and everyone else is wrong, no matter how much more they know’ indignation, and turning to march into her bosses office.
“Oh don’t Gwen. He’s been in such a good mood since he came back, don’t start on him.”
“If we keep letting him get away with this Captain Cryptic routine, he’ll never change,” Gwen said, pulling away from the light grasp Tosh had on her arm and stomping over to Jack’s office.
“Why do you keep doing it? You come back, and act like everything is wonderful, but you’re still keeping secrets.” She snapped as soon as she was inside the door.
Jack put down his pen slowly and looked at her with a blank expression.
“Did I lapse into a coma over this admittedly dull paperwork, and miss a whole chunk of conversation? Or did you just come into MY office, and start having a go for no reason?” Jack’s tone was light, but there was a warning in his blue eyes. Gwen ignored it, ploughing on regardless.
“Tosh was looking at this.” Gwen snatched up the device, and Jack pushed to his feet, alarmed.
“Gwen, put that down, please.”
“No. Tosh was doing her job, examining it, and you waltz over and take it off her, claiming it was too dangerous.”
“That is not what I said, not that it is any of your business how I run this place. What I said was that she didn’t want to be poking it, and that is was worse than a weapon. If I told you lot what that thing was, you wouldn’t be able to resist messing with it. Put it down Gwen.”
“Oh that’s right, the wonderful Jack Harkness, has to be here to protect humans because they are too slow, stupid, backward, whatever, to ready themselves for this big change that is coming. You won’t even tell us what that is,” she said shrilly, clenching her fist around the little machine and waving her hand in his direction.
“Don’t squeeze the buttons.” He yelled, taking a step in her direction, but it was too late.
A pale blue mist spat from the little thing as she waved it in his direction, and enveloped Jack. She saw him glare in her direction, just for a moment before he screamed in pain and crumpled to his knees.
Gwen backed rapidly away from the mist, halted in the doorway as she backed into a solid body.
“What the fuck have you done?” Ianto demanded, snatching the device from her hand as the mist began to dissipate.
They both stared in shock at where Jack had been standing, hearing the thumping of the other two’s feet as they ran over.
“What the hell?” Owen blurted, covering the reaction of them all.
