let's go back to the Doctor, Rose and Jack and the inequality of their relationship - I think Jack quickly learned upon joining the TARDIS crew where he ranked at the bottom and not in a life-affirming having a great time sort of way either - Rose automatically assumes that SHE is Jack and/or the Doctor's choice of dance partner, etc. And while I can see Jack wanting to put Rose's safety before his own (he's a trained time agent and soldier afterall) I think it comes out pretty piss-poor that the Doctor seems to value Jack's life so little - Rose has to remind the Doctor that Jack said "Good bye" at the end of "The Doctor Dances", he keeps Jack with him on the gamestation while sending Rose home to safety although he KNOWS it will mean death for Jack - then the Doctor abandons Jack on the gamestation - a Jack freshly revived from the dead, a Jack ignorant of his true circumstances, a Jack who gave his life for the Doctor and left behind like so much chattel -- now mind you I would have bought the abandonment if it was because of the regeneration sickness BUT we're told in Utopia that nope the Doctor just didn't want to be anywhere near Jack because he's WRONG... like you said it's hardly Jack's fault - if the Doctor should turn on anyone it should be the TARDIS and Rose not Jack - Jack truly was and is the victim in that circumstance -- so yeah the Doctor and Jack have a hearts to heart while Jack is struggling to save the lives of the remaining humans - it's through a safety door - where frankly the Doctor is yet again far far too cavalier about Jack and his inability to remain dead.... and once again the Doctor's attention is first focused on Martha and then on the Professor and then on the Master - seeming to brush Jack off to the side again like so much chattel during so much of those eps....

here's a side note and one that will probably NOT be addressed by the writers in DW or TW - a year of torture at the hands of the Master - of being killed and coming back to life only to have it happen over and over and over again and suddenly the year doesn't exist for anyone but for Jack and the Doctor and the few on board the Valiant -- sorry but no matter how resilient Jack is - I think there has got to be residual psychological damage there - it might be buried - but it's got to be there - Jack is damaged and frankly I hope that Ianto gets to truly help Jack heal.... of course in fanfic the Doctor can be the one to do it or the Doctor and Ianto together -- but damn within the tv series stuff it has to be Ianto and did I mention how much I LOVE Ianto this season and that he's getting so many good lines and the wonderful byplay between Jack and Ianto

sorry again... I have to say that by the end of 'The Last of the Time Lords' I was pretty damned disgusted with Tennant's Doctor - I personally overall like Doctor Ten BUT I can't say I'm overly impressed with some of the things they've allowed his Doctor to become - vengeful, unforgiving, downright cold - I don't like that - for all his standoffishness, his damaged psyche I think Doctor Nine was a 'nicer' person - cause honestly if Jack had been first introduced when Doctor Ten was around I don't think Doctor Ten would have given him 'a chance' to redeem himself and that's just wrong... on so many levels
