Yeah, Jack needs to give the people around him a 'reality check'. The world isn't always a nice place, it's not all sweetness and light, and someone has to make the hard decisions, because they don't seem to have the balls, and when they do grow some, they damn near end the world (EoD).

As to the writers vision of the Doctor's reaction to Jack, you would think someone would point out that it was 'Saint Rose' in conjunction with the TARDIS who made him what he is, and neither of them got left behind.

Ooh, sorry, don't know where that came from, but I will definitely keep up the AU's
the problem with the people around Jack 'growing balls' it seems that they tend to lose their intelligence and common sense in proportion to the size of those balls - Owen who is supposed to be so damned intelligent - is so damned blinded by his love for Diane (wasn't that just about getting to be way too much even for his self-centred character) that he could not see the big picture if someone had drawn it for him and painted big bull's eye on the damned thing - so then he turns his vitriol on Jack and gets upset cause Jack fires him *rolls eyes* and then he turns around and kills Jack - and essentially he did it three times - with three different shots all potentially fatal in themselves (sort of again I think like Peter denying Jesus three times I guess)

then we have Gwen the supposed 'heart of Torchwood' who is about as cold and calculating and self-absorbed as they come - she lies to Rhys in the first ep BEFORE she's even a part of Torchwood, she cheats on Rhys, then to salve her conscience she confesses her transgression, demands he forgive her only to Retcon the guy (after seeing first hand what Retcon has the potential to do) that whole confess, demand forgiveness then wipe his memory thing - if I had not already hated her - that one would have been enough all on its own - she feels an attraction to Jack - who we know will flirt with anything with a pulse and/or sentient - I truly think in her head she sees a future where somehow she WITH Jack and still has Rhys on the side and all is hunky-dory - and all her supposed empathy for the people they deal with - frankly I think it's more her own projection of HER feelings on things

it still bugs the hell out of me that she berated Jack and crew in Day One for eating, talking, joking while Carys is 'suffering' in the holding cells - yet as was pointed out to her - they were analyzing air samples, etc. - and frankly they cannot despite implications otherwise they cannot operate 24/7 without food or rest or even a moment or two of downtime - and yet Jack just accepts her harsh judgement and says in return then she needs to show them, etc. -- frankly I was NOT impressed with her 'research' into Carys's background - Tosh was the one that saved the freaking day by pulling up Carys's CV and finding out where she was working -- Gwen's derision of Jack's friend's obsession with the faeries just wound me even tighter - she thinks she knows all because SHE did a school report on the faeries and photos? give me a freaking break -- then despite witnessing and hearing the statements of the faeries about how they will wreck havoc on the earth if they are not allowed to claim their own (the little girl), despite witnessing the girl's stepfather death at the hands of the faeries, despite knowing from personal experience that the faeries can get into anywhere they so choose - despite all that Gwen is one of the first to 'turn' on Jack when he makes that hard decision and lets the faeries take the girl.... SIGH - I'm sorry some things (characters) just wind me up....
