I so love the somewhat subtle proprietary interest Nine has expressed in Jack. -ie. his constant attentiveness (watching over Jack while he sleeps, offering to play chess with him and not just let him isolate himself with a book), warning "his" Jack off Rose's bringing him breakfast and not feeling bad about brushing off Rose's huffiness, over having been tossed overboard in essence, when her breakfast and attempt to cozy up to Jack is summarily dissmissed by Nine. And playing chess with Jack is a surefire way to engage Jack, maybe learn about him (and his thinking through his strategies) and see if Jack might be intrigued with the Doctor too. :-)
