Glad you reposted this part before carrying on with part 2. It's a good way to refresh people's memories since it was first posted.
I always thought that Jack's line about the vermouth could have alluded to something more than the obvious. So you're making it a poison he purposely drank was inspired. (ps. I'm glad you included the line by the Doctor that alluded to Jack taking charge of how he'd die rather than making it out to be a coward's choice (like he just couldn't face the agonies of being blown up). Jack does seem to me a man who would take control of his actions and environment, esp. since he's probably feeling like all choices/control were ripped from him by the Time Agency and the missing two years. So wanting to exert control is very likely.
Plus, I just love the Doctor catching him as he collapsed and taking care of him. Of course, I also love that Jack could surprise the Doctor (with his thank you delivered via telepathic waves) and that intrigued the Doctor and mayhaps also excited him being the mystery wrapped in the enigma that was Jack in that first adventure. And we all know the Doctor loves unraveling a mystery.
