******************************************
Tosh had hurried back to the Hub after forcing herself to sleep for as short a time as she could get away with and still function. It was just coming up to 6am when she arrived, and the place was kind of spooky when you were the only person there. She wondered how Jack and Ianto stood it, being here alone. She shook it off and set her computer running and loading all the scans she had so far of the first device, before going and making herself an instant coffee.
She was not entirely surprised when Owen was the next one in, just before seven. He came over to where she was waiting for the scan results on the new device that the Doctor had dropped off the night before.
“I thought you might be here at some ungodly hour. How is it looking? Do you think that you’ll be able to use it?”
“It looks like a good possibility at the moment, this one looks like a much newer model, but the components inside it are similar enough that I should be able to use it to repair the original one. I wonder how the Doctor got his hands on it.”
“An alien ship crashed in the sea yesterday, in Southend.”
“So you reckon the Doctor helped them, and in return, they gave him this?”
“From what I gathered from our friend in UNIT, not just the Doctor. There were four civilians on the life boat that brought the aliens to the shore. One of whom was a small boy.”
“They took Raiko out there, to rescue possible hostiles?” She demanded.
“It seems it was the kid who identified them first, as non-hostiles.”
“Huh.”
“Yeah, anyway, do you want another cup of coffee?” Owen asked.
“No, thanks Owen. The instant just isn’t a patch on Ianto’s.”
“Tell me about it.” Owen sank down in a chair beside her desk, looking at her thoughtfully.
“You know that we’ll more than likely have to get used to it, or learn to operate that machine, don’t you?” He asked.
“What? Why would we have to do that?” She asked, startled.
“They’re going to go with him Tosh, both of them.”
“What makes you think that?”
“Because he’s wanted them to for a while, you can see it when he leaves, that he wants to drag them into the TARDIS and just take them. After this little debacle, both the tea-boy and the time lord will be pressuring him to go, and if they both do it, he’ll cave.”
“But we need them here.” Tosh protested.
“That’s just my take, I could be wrong.” He shrugged.
Tosh bit her lip, if Owen, the least empathic, observant person she had ever met, had seen the possibility, then there was a good chance he was right.
“Has Gwen figured this out?”
“No, for a copper, she’s really blinkered on this. She thinks you’ll fix Jack, he’ll forgive her, and everything will be back to normal. But she did say that she hoped he had learned his lesson about keeping technology from us.”
“What do you think that Ianto and the Doctor are going to do to her?”
“Something creative but non permanent, I hope.”
“You WANT them to do something to her?”
“No, they’re going to do something. I just hope its non permanent.”
Tosh smirked, glancing at him. When you got Owen on his own, when there was no one to show off to, or play up for, he was quite a nice human being.
They heard Gwen coming down, and Owen headed back to his own desk, his habitual scowl falling over his face as they fell back into their recognized rolls.
“Oh, you two are here already.” Gwen said, stopping short inside the door.
“There was a development last night, in the chances of getting Jack back to normal.”
“Oh. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Why would we? You were with Rhys, there is nothing you can do to help with the analysis.”
“Nor can Owen, and he knows all about it.”
“Owen was still here when the Doctor turned up last night,” Tosh said. Her temper suddenly flared, and she stood up, turning on Gwen.
“And to be perfectly frank, Gwen, it was none of your business. This is all your fault, I told you to leave it alone when he took that device off me, but oh no, you had to be all ‘I know best’ and go off and try to force him to do things YOUR way. Newsflash Gwen, you know NOTHING. You have been here five minutes, you know nothing about how Torchwood runs. It isn’t like the police, it isn’t like anything else. We do things Jack’s way because he knows what he’s talking about. Now he’s a five year old child, because of you, and when, if, he gets back to normal, he and Ianto will probably LEAVE, because of you!”
Tosh took a deep breath, flushing and sinking back into her chair. She didn’t normally go off like that, lose her temper in that way.
Gwen stared at her, mouth hanging open, eyes artfully wide and filled with tears. When Tosh made no move to apologize for what she had said, Gwen gave a theatrical sob, and dashed off in the direction of the cells. Tosh looked over at Owen guiltily, and saw him smirk and mime applause before going off to ‘comfort’ Gwen.
Left in peace, Tosh stilled the shaking of her hands and got back to work on studying the new device. She had identified most of the components now that would repair the original one, and she thought that she could probably fix the rest herself if she couldn’t find any analogues.
In the cells, Owen patted Gwen’s back idly, rolling his eyes as she sobbed on his shoulder. He saw the weevil in the cell at the end of the row of cells pressed against the glass, watching with its head cocked to the side, and for a moment, just a moment, he contemplated the merits of feeding Gwen to it.
“How could Tosh say something so horrible?” She whined.
“There, there, she’s just tense, we all are. Don’t worry about it Gwen, why don’t you go off for a walk, get us all some good coffee from Starbucks when you come back, and give everyone a chance to cool down.”
“OK.” She sniffled, pulling away and heading off to fix her face before leaving.
“God help us.” Owen sighed before going back up to his desk.
Tbc.

lol, loved the new chapter!

Believe me, I wasn't apologizing for the Gwen Bashing, I was merely stating a fact *grin* For some completely unfathomable reason, people actually like the slapper.
