Surprise (Eternity-verse 2)

Not mine, but my birthday is coming up if someone would like to package them up and pop them in the post to me *grins hopefully*

Surprise

*
The Doctor grinned at Jack as they piled into the console room and slammed the outer doors closed against the mob of natives chasing after them. Jack leaned against the doors, panting, spots dancing before his eyes.

The Doctors grin faded as he realized something was wrong, and he darted across and caught Jack as he started to slide down the door, easing him down to the deck gently and holding his trembling mate gently as his breathing began to slow.

"Jack, are you OK? Are you injured?" He asked in alarm.

"Just dizzy. I'll be Ok when I get my breath back." He gasped, leaning into the Doctor as the older man rubbed his back gently.

"We need to check you over Jack, you've been dizzy a few times recently. You've been sleeping more than normal too. I'm starting to get a bit worried."

Jack lay his head on the Doctor's shoulder and closed his eyes, tired and a little scared, he never even noticed when the darkness enveloped him.

The Doctor was startled as Jack went limp against him as he passed out. He stood up and gathered him up in his arms, cradling him tenderly against his chest as he carried him to the medlab.

Jack woke up as the Doctor was settling him on the padded table in the center of the medlab.

"I fainted?" He asked, and the Doctor could feel his fear over their bond.

"Yeah. We're going to get to the bottom of this Jack."

"I'm supposed to be immortal, I don't understand why this is happening."

"We will find out Jack. I just got you back, I'm not going to lose you now." He said firmly, leaning down to kiss him.

He started by checking out Jack's heart, but that was strong as ever. Everything he checked came up clean. Jack was fit and perfectly healthy.

"You haven't found anything have you?" Jack asked.

"Nope, according to every scan and blood test I've run, you are fit as a fiddle."

"So why do I get dizzy when I stand up too fast? When I exert myself? Why did I just faint?"

"I don't know. It sounds like your blood pressure might be dropping occasionally, like when you stand up fast or do too much."

"So what, I have to get used to it? This has never happened before."

"No, there must be a cause. We just have to keep an eye on when this happens. See if there are any possible outside causes." The Doctor said, taking Jack's hand.

There was an annoyed chirp from the TARDIS and both men got the impression she would be rolling her eyes if she had eyes.

"Do you know what's up with him?" The Doctor asked, automatically glancing up to the ceiling.

A blue light shone down from the ceiling, enveloping Jack's stomach. An image appeared in the light, crystal clear and unmistakable in the TARDIS's own version of an ultrasound scan.

"Holy crap." Jack breathed.

"That isn't possible. How in Rassilon's name can you be pregnant? You're male."

Jack didn't meet his eyes, his free hand picking at the fabric of his trousers.

"You knew it was possible?" The Doctor asked quietly.

"I didn't know for sure it was still possible."

"You've been pregnant before?"

"Yes."

"Tell me, please." The Doctor said, sliding onto the couch next to Jack and pulling him into his arms. Jack cuddled in against him, grateful for the comfort.

"I was only fifteen, far too young to be sexually active, but he was older and gorgeous, and very flattering to a gangly fifteen year old geek. He was also very fast on his feet when he found out he'd got me pregnant, called me a freak, and ran."

"So male pregnancy was unusual, even where you're from?"

"It was impossible, the males were still human males. Turns out though that in the past, one of the males of the line decided to experiment with a spot of genetic engineering. He was gay, but wanted his own child. The alterations he made to his genetic code stuck though, passing down the family line. No one knew that until I got caught out. I was the first since then to be flexible that way. The colony was kind of backwards for the time."

"So you were fifteen and pregnant. What happened then?"

"I couldn't terminate the pregnancy, even at fifteen I believed that the baby had a right to live. I believed firmly in the right to choose, and I chose to carry the baby to term. My mother pulled me from school, got me a doctor who she trusted to sign me off and monitor the pregnancy. The birth almost killed me, and the doctor was pretty sure the damage would prevent me conceiving ever again. I was fifteen, that didn't seem too bad to me. I never did get pregnant again after that, so I assumed the doctor was right."

"And the baby?"

"Oh, she was beautiful, tiny and perfect and healthy as you like. My little girl, my Lilly. Mom and I had agreed that we would claim she was my mom's niece, and that her sister and husband had died, leaving the baby alone in the world so she had agreed to raise her. I was back at school, recovered from my 'illness', my mom was looking after the baby, everything was perfect."

"So where is she now?"

"Gone, dead." Jack whispered, tears filling his eyes.

"How?" The Doctor asked, shocked.

"Mom was visiting a friend and there was a huge storm while they were there. Lightning struck a huge Ironwood tree in the woman's garden, it fell and hit the house. Mom, Lilly, the woman and her four year old son were all killed. I had to stand there, alone, and watch my mother and baby being buried, but at least they were together. I threw myself into my studies, worked out so that I was less of a geek, and was the youngest entrant into the Time Agency Academy in its history when I enlisted at sixteen. You know what happened after that." Jack said.

The Doctor held him tightly one hand stroking the soft dark hair.

"Do you think I'm a freak now, are you going to leave me too?" Jack asked in a tiny voice.

"Never. You're my mate, and I love you." The Doctor swore, kissing him deeply. He pulled away slightly and pressed a hand lightly to Jack's stomach.

"We're going to have a baby." He said with a grin.

"Yes, we are." Jack said. His answering smile was uncertain, and tremulous, but it was there. His mate wasn't freaked out, he still loved him, and he wanted their baby.

"We're going to have to be a lot more careful now. We can't have you in danger every other day, we have to take care of you." The Doctor said, and Jack could see the wheels turning in the timelord's head, planning how he was going to keep them safe, and he relaxed, drifting off to sleep in the Doctor's arms, knowing that everything was going to be all right.

I'm toying with a couple of idea's in the same little universe. A visit to Torchwood may be on the cards (you can just see Ianto babysitting, can't you)
Maybe a visit to the colony where Jack grew up too, to pay their respects where Jack's mom and daughter are buried.

Sounds great, I love the idea of Jack's visit to his home place.

Oh yes I can see Ianto babysitting, (grin)

Looking forward to reading them, not that I am putting you under any pressure :)

Love your icon by the way.
